This month, we’re thrilled to feature one of our favorite recent transformations — a 1950s Swedish high-back chair in the style of Paolo Buffa and Edward Wormley, reimagined in Voutsa’s bold and artistic Plaid Blooms Technicolor – Fann fabric.

This piece is a celebration of sculptural design and fearless upholstery — the kind of project that reminds us why we love what we do.

🪑 Sculptural, vintage European frame: Originally crafted in mid-century Sweden, the chair boasts sleek lines, curved arms, and elegant proportions that speak to both Buffa’s refined Italian modernism and Wormley’s relaxed American sophistication. The solid wood frame has been carefully restored to preserve its character while ensuring it’s ready for many more decades of use.

🎨 Whimsical, high-fashion upholstery: The fabric chosen — Plaid Blooms Technicolor – Fann by Voutsa — is nothing short of electric. Bold floral overlays intersect with a punchy plaid grid in a kaleidoscope of colors. The result is upholstery that feels like wearable art: expressive, fashion-forward, and deeply joyful. It’s the kind of fabric that elevates a vintage piece into a modern showstopper.

🧵 Fully restored and hand-finished in Austin: From frame repairs to re-webbing and padding, every inch of this chair has been given the Ambrose Upholstery treatment: hands-on, high-quality craftsmanship done right here in Austin. We take pride in treating each piece like a collaboration between its original maker, today’s designer, and the future owner. This one-of-a-kind chair is more than just a seat — it’s a conversation piece. Whether placed in a cozy reading nook, the lobby of a boutique hotel, or the corner of a design-forward living room, it adds a touch of playful sophistication and vintage soul.

At Ambrose Upholstery, we believe in breathing new life into old favorites — and this project is a perfect example of how a daring fabric and a classic form can come together to create something unforgettable.

Thank you for continuing to support local craftsmanship. We’re proud to be locally owned, locally made, and part of what makes Austin great.
